Cole Brian – Home Birth Photography

I have been scheduled to photograph the arrival of Dennis & Sally’s second son since back in March and the wait has felt incredibly long.  I’m sure it felt longer for Sally.  Well the call came at about 2:30AM 5 days past the due date and despite the ungodly hour I appreciated the abandoned Deerfoot Trail.  When I arrived, Sally was doing stairs to spur the contractions to move along and her water had already broken.  Things seemed to progress rather slowly for the next several hours and the midwife decided to leave until things picked up again.  After a couple more hours I also wandered over to a friend’s house to give Dennis & Sally some space and time to rest.  When I called at about noon to check in I didn’t get an answer right away and that should have been my clue that the tempo had changed.  After a few more minutes I got a text saying the midwife thought things would go quickly now.  Even though I was only about 15 minutes away my phone rang when I was on my way over with the news that he had already arrived!  Fortunately I did get there in time to get some photographs of Dennis cutting the cord.  According to all accounts, Sally was 4-5 cm at about 12:55PM and young Cole arrived with the cord wrapped around his neck 4 times at 1:05PM.  Everyone was in a fair bit of shock at how it all happened once I arrived and in hindsight it was probably best that I wasn’t there!  Dennis hadn’t even had the chance to press record on the previously set up video camera.  Despite missing the exact moment of birth, the time spent afterwards with everyone relaxing and soaking it all in was truly the highlight and I loved witnessing Cole’s first hours settling in to his family.  It was an incredible day and an incredible experience.  Congratulations to Dennis and Sally and big brother Chase on the safe arrival of Cole Brian and a huge thank you for allowing me to capture another chapter in your family’s story.  (Other chapters linked here: Engagement, Wedding, Maternity, & Chase.)

These tell a beautiful story. Witnessing a birth always makes me cry for joy, and these photos had the same effect. Well done! Kind of makes me want to try birth photography!
